About ZAVECO
Discover our history, our leadership structure, and the empirical community-driven initiatives shaping a resilient ecosystem across the Zanzibar archipelago.
Driving Change Since 2017
Zanzibar Volunteers for Environmental Conservation (ZAVECO) is a legally registered non-governmental organization (Registration No. Z0000080690). We operate out of our main administrative headquarters in Kibele, Zanzibar.
While our strategic office coordinates regional efforts from Kibele, our fieldwork actively targets the full archipelago. Our current project configurations are heavily deployed directly inside Ungujaukuu Village, Uzi Island, and Nyamanzi—zones facing mounting resource pressures from plastic waste and critical mangrove deforestation.

Our Core Strategic Pillars
1. Direct Action & Conservation
We host routine mangrove restoration sessions and targeted beach sanitation programs. Key accomplishments include organizing 150+ village members in Ungujaukuu to stabilize local waters, alongside continuous Plastic Hunt field campaigns in Nyamanzi.
2. Awareness & Applied Education
We coordinate training with international bodies like Canada's Santé Anne College. ZAVECO routinely facilitates academic fieldwork, such as presenting climate risk perception data directly to the Department of Forestry, and supports campaigns like World Ocean Day.
3. Creating Sustainable Livelihoods
We bridge ecological safety with community financial independence. ZAVECO manages community bee-keeping networks, graduate-led mushroom production farms, and custom "Green Safari" eco-tours that return all generated revenues straight to village centers.
4. Harnessing Volunteer Networks
Volunteers form the primary operational engine of ZAVECO. We coordinate alongside local youth networks and align with UVIKYUTA Tanzania to place international researchers inside specific community ecosystems for extended periods.
